Rickshaws for refugees win USD$1 million Hult Prize

The intersection of entrepreneurship, innovation and social impact is happening in a most unlikely place: the largest slum in the world.   Pakistan’s Orangi Town is a slum of 2.5 million people. It’s the proving ground of a start-up that recently won the $1 million Hult Prize, an annual global business competition tackling the world’s biggest challenges. This year’s theme is to dramatically improve the lives of refugees. â€Å"We are bringing a generation of change with forward thinking,† says Hult Prize CEO Ahmad Ashkar, summarizing the 50,000 innovative business ideas submitted this year. Ashkar founded the competition eight years ago while an MBA student at Hult International Business School. He was inspired by a class on social entrepreneurship and the power of a good idea. Today, the business school partners with the Hult Prize organization, lending faculty expertise to the entrepreneurs honing their final pitches. The start-up is already shaking up the existing transportation network in the slum. The four founders are New Jersey college students who traveled to Pakistan and studied the rhythm of life in Orangi Town. â€Å"This is the largest slum in Asia. They are displaced, urbanized refugees,† says Hasan Usmani, a first-generation Pakistani American and recent Rutgers University graduate. â€Å"All four of us on the team come from parents who are immigrants, so this is for them.† Here’s how Roshni Rides works: The start-up pays rickshaw drivers a monthly salary to drive on a set route with fixed fares.   For passengers, the system eliminates price gouging. For drivers, it creates a steadier flow of passenger volume. The whole business is about creating efficiency, says CEO Gia Farooqi. A rickshaw driver now picks up six to eight customers a day, but two million rickshaws are on the road. Thats crazy! The rickshaws are underutilized. So we tried to answer why theres the mismatch. Here were the challenges: Uneven supply.   The team discovered most rickshaw drivers congregate around urban centers where they can charge higher fares and get faster turnover. This means a glut of rickshaws in a handful of areas while the rest of the sprawling slum is left with fewer transportation options. Personal safety.   The bus system is overcrowded and dominated by men. According to Roshni Rides, 89% of Pakistani women don’t take a job that requires a commute mainly because of safety. The team sees rickshaw transportation as a solution for women. Affordability.   Price gouging by rickshaw drivers is common outside the urban centers. Roshni Rides lowered their rickshaw fares to 80 rupees (US $0.76) per ride. They put the drivers on a fixed salary so the drivers have guaranteed income that’s 27% higher than a normal month’s wage. The drivers are also given devices to swipe pre-paid fare cards. This reduces the need for cash. This years topic is particularly important because we have 65 million displaced people in the world—the largest number since World War II,† said Clinton.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"This toll of involuntary migration is enormous.† According to the United Nations, 55% of the world’s refugees come from South Sudan, Afghanistan and Syria.   20 people are displaced from their homes every minute because of conflict or persecution. Pakistan and Turkey are among the biggest host countries for refugees. The UN Refugee Agency reports that an unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from home. Whether in a refugee camp or a slum, it’s all about survival.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"They are in a spiral,† explains  Bill McDonough, architect and co-author of the book â€Å"Cradle to Cradle† on sustainable living. â€Å"Sustainability has three aspects: economic, social, and environmental. The Hult Prize judges evaluated the business plans of six global finalist teams. The ideas ranged from transportation upgrades to a digital jobs platform for refugees. The choice was so difficult that it took three rounds of voting to determine a winner. The deciding factor: financial viability. â€Å"Social entrepreneurs often lose sight that they have to run a business. You can’t rely on donations,† says judge Chuck Kane, chairman of One Laptop Per Child. â€Å"If you’re not profitable or just break even, you impact fewer and fewer people.† It was hard to actually know where USD$1 million would be most transformative, says another judge Premal Shah, President of the microfinance non-profit, Kiva.org. What I look for is pilot traction. The pilot that Roshni Rides conducted in Pakistan helped them reshape their product and business plan. The original idea was a network of solar-powered rickshaws. The team quickly saw the cost challenges of converting existing rickshaws into a solar vehicle so they scrapped the idea.   The team also mapped out ten  stops for customers on a rickshaw shuttle route. After conducting surveys, the team learned the majority of passengers wanted to go to the same few places (e.g. market, schools, hospital, employment center) so they whittled down the route to these locations. â€Å"We have a lot of data from our pilot program to go through,† says Farooqi. â€Å"We have a scaling plan and we want to expand to the rest of South Asia. William Shakespeare William Shakespeares actual birth date is not officially known, but according to records and research he was born on April 23, 1564. This date is also Saint Georges Day, a British holiday. He was born on Henley Street in Stratford Upon Avon to parents John and Mary. He was a successful businessman and he also held several positions in the town of Stratford including one equal to being the mayor. He later lost this job and fell into poverty before dying in 1601. Shakespeares parents had three children that died before William was born, and he had two siblings named Gilbert and Joan. Because his father was an important man in Stratford when William was young, William received a good education. He attended a grammar school at Stratford upon Avon. Shakespeare wrote for this troupe and acted with them too. The troupe performed plays for Queen Elizabeth often. Shakespeare left theatre briefly after 1592 when an outbreak of the plague made many theatres close. He wrote sonnets and poetry until he returned to theatre around 1594. Shakespeare bought the Globe Theatre with his troupe the Chamberlains Men after he returned to acting. The Globe was an open-air theatre and got its name because it was shaped like an octagon and was round like a globe. The Globe was one of the major theatres in London at the time, along with the Rose, the Swan and the Hope. Shakespeare and his troupe continued to perform for Queen Elizabeth and her court at this theatre. The Globe Theatre would later burn down during a performance of King Henry VII. Shakespeare continued to write, act and be involved in theatre until he died in 1616. The cause of Shakespeares death is unknown to this day. The vicar of Stratfords Holy Trinity Church explained Shakespeares death in an entry in his journal by saying, Shakespeare, Drayton and Ben Jonson had a merry meeting and it seems drank too hard, for Shakespeare died of a fever there contracted. Shakespeares influence in literature has continued to the present day for many reasons. He continues to be considered one of the most famous and influential writers and poets in history because his characters still seem believable and real even though his stories are set in a time long ago. The reader is still able to relate to them because Shakespeare wrote about common human emotions and understandable events. His characters are motivated by jealousy, anger, greed, power, love and lust. Readers can always relate to a character in Shakespeares work or sympathize with what the character goes through because people still feel those kinds of emotions today and always will. Shakespeare also wrote in a language and style that were unique when he first wrote his plays and sonnets and are now considered classic. Shakespeare is said to have impacted the English language as a whole, not just literature. He did this with the language he used in his plays and the structures and languages in hi s sonnets and poetry. Most of Shakespeares sonnets were written in the 1590s and there are references in them to many people in Shakespeares life, including his wife Anne. But the first 126 sonnets Shakespeare wrote were actually addressed to a man, making some people question Shakespeares sexuality. There is no proof that Shakespeare was or wasnt gay, and people continue to debate what he meant by addressing these sonnets to a male. Many of Shakespeares tragedies were based on Greek and Roman myths or historical events, like Julius Caesar. Shakespeare also wrote histories like Richard III and King Henry VIII that focused on real historical figures and their lives. Shakespeares comedies include Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Nights Dream. Many of Shakespeares comedies include comical situations involving lovers and some kind of magical element like fairies, sprites or witches. Shakespeares plays and sonnets have inspired many movies over the years. There have been many movie versions of Shakespeares plays like Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth where actors use the actual lines of the play. But there are also movies that do not follow the lines of the play but have a story based on issues addressed in the play or that mimic the plays characters. Some recent examples are the musical West Side Story, which was based on Romeo and Juliet, and the movie Ten Things I Hate About You and which was based on Taming of the Shrew. The review considers how exploitation and oppression affects humanization. It criticizes the â€Å"Banking model† of education, and recommends the dialogical approach which can transform individuals.   Introduction The pedagogy of the oppressed by Paulo Freire brings together the political, educational and philosophical theory. The author explores the aspect of oppression and the foundation of liberation. Paulo Freire holds the notion that in order for persons to experience liberation, there is a need for the development of critical consciousness and thinking process in the person. Freire asserts that this is only possible through a pedagogy that creates a bond between the teacher and the learner, encouraging the learner to participate in dialogue and the practice of humanization via thought and its corresponding action (Freire 2004). The intention of this document is to provide a critical review of Freire’s work by considering his assertions on humanization and dehumanization, and oppression in the context of education and sham generosity. Freire recognizes the importance of humanization to the human kind and believes that the concern for humanization culminates in acknowledgment of dehumanization as an â€Å"ontological possibility as well as a historical truth† (Freire 2004, p. 43). He asserts that if an individual perceives the degree of dehumanization, he may question the viability of humanization. Freire views humanization and dehumanization as potentials for an individual, as an uncompleted being with knowledge of their incompletion.   Freire believes that injustice, oppression, exploitation, as well as the violence of the oppressors have thwarted humanization (Freire 2004, p. 44). Humanization is exemplified by the craving of the oppressed for justice, independence and lost humanity. The author asserts that dehumanization is an indication of those deprived of their humanity and also those who have deprived of humanity from others. He asserts that dehumanization is responsible for the distortion of the vocation of humanization. He believes that distortion is a historical occurrence, but not a vocation. The author opposes the idea of admitting dehumanization as a historic vocation, since the idea would lead to cynicism. He further asserts that the struggles for humanization, for liberation of labor, for elimination of discrimination would make no sense. Freire asserts that distortion of humanization may cause the oppressed to retaliate to the oppressors in an effort to recover their humanity. He believes this action by the oppressed changes them into â€Å"oppressors of the oppressors† a situation that makes their effort worthless (Freire 2004, p. 45). The author states that the oppressed has a responsibility of ensuring the liberation of both themselves and the oppressors since the oppressors have no power to unshackle themselves and the individuals they oppress. He believes that the oppressed has sufficient power to transform the oppressors into beings that recognizes humanization. The author considers true generosity as that which employs the fight whose purpose is to distort the vices responsible for the nourishing of sham generosity. He believes that the realization of true generosity and humanity should commence from the oppressed because they understand the importance of a liberated society better than the oppressors (Jackson, 2007). In order to realize liberation, the oppressed must be dedicated to the task, demonstrating love, which is in opposition to the lack of love that exists in the hearts of the oppressors. Freire asserts that the â€Å"fear of freedom† experienced by the oppressed may lead them to adopt the behavior of the oppressor, or subject them to the position of the oppressed. He, therefore, advocates for the examination of the ‘fear of freedom† (Freire 2004, p. 46). The author believes that in order to attain freedom, one must be responsible and steadfast in pursuance of freedom.   He believes that people can overcome o ppression by being conscious of its origin, and developing situations that value humanity. When looking at the teacher and student relationship, Freire criticizes traditional pedagogy because he opposes the aspect of memorization, which he believes turns learners into â€Å"containers† to be filled by the teacher (Freire 2004, p. 72). He asserts that the practice converts education into a practice of deposition in which the teacher is the depositor, and the learner is the receptor. The author terms this concept as â€Å"banking† because it only allows the reception, filling and storage of deposits to â€Å"containers†. According to freire, the â€Å"concept of banking† assumes that learners are devoid of knowledge and, therefore, the teacher or educator should bestow this knowledge to them. The author believes that education should follow a better concept in which the teacher-student relationship transforms into a situation where all become students and teachers at the same time. The author indicates that oppressor’s aim is to change the perception of the oppressed and not the condition that leads to their oppression. He argues that the â€Å"Banking concept† of education perpetuates oppression through the application of patterns and instruments which converts the oppressed into â€Å"welfare recipients† (Freire 2004, p.74).   In order to overcome the handcuffs of this concept, the teacher and the learner should employ a partnership approach which promotes critical thinking for both the educator and the learner. Through this approach, students will change into persons able to perform different tasks instead of memorizing words that exist (Holst, 2006). He believes that this practice causes some persons to possess naà ¯ve consciousness, which despite their, knowledge of possession fails to change it; they perceive the situation as normal.   Critical thinking would help students subject themselves to reality and thus fight for their un restraint. Although Friere advocates for the awareness of reality, he argues that those who succeed in liberating themselves ends up becoming what they were against. Friere advocates for dialogical education, which he perceives as a practice of deliverance. This concept entails a mutual exchange capable of changing situations (Bowers, 2005). The dialogical concept encourages students to criticize various daily situations and find solutions for them. Through problematization of situations, it is possible to create knowledge in the reality that environs the individual (Schugurensky, 2011).   It is possible to overcome limiting situations passed on by the oppressors. Freire assertions imply that if; there is a need to perform a study of a generative topic, it is imperative to perform a study of the thoughts of the people in need of liberation. This is for the purpose of avoiding de-contextualization of their work. While liberating persons, the idea is to make the teaching an element of their reality. The author argues that in order to accomplish liberalization of man and defeat oppression, it is important to avoid the use of common ideas (Bowers, 2005). He proposes that one should create own ideas and convey them via praxis and communication. To perform a good study of a generative topic entails the person’s action of visiting the region where the action occurred. This is for the purpose of bringing into the light thinking of the oppressed. Also, the application of thinking to the learning procedure through concentration on group communication among contestants is vital. This is because; through communication or interaction the participants are able to attain consciousness of reality, in addition expressing this reality fully. Freire perceives formal schooling and also the educational system related to it as undesired. This is because he believes that it retards human growth as well as initiative. That is why Freire proposes opposing education methods, one being the practice of liberty, and the other domination. According to freire, education should raise political consciousness. The purpose of Freire’s educational methodology is to subvert the oppressive regimes. The methodology proposed by the author considers development as non material and, therefore, perceives an individual as the chief contributor of nation development. Freire’s notions of education appear rather selective. They do not attempt to articulate the vast richness of their opinions on issues regarding the collective personality of man’s humanity (Pitts 1972, p. 116). Freire’s work does not contain a succinct analysis of gender and a clear description of the role the teacher in the proposed models. The issue of the authority of the educator is partially discussed although he perceives the teacher as an element of oppression. He appears to present a pedagogy of the oppressed, whose main aim is to perform the criticism of colonialism while, on the other hand, viewing the world via the incomplete and meticulous lens of patriarchy. Freire’s work does not acknowledge the issue of gender, class and race of teachers and learners. He also fails to consider their structural locations (Sue, 2007). The author seems to have forgotten that structural inequalities are critical, especially when articulating the idea that transformation is possible via individual thought and action.   I believe the author should have reflected on the issue of structural inequality, race and class in order to present a clear description of the possible change via t he utopian concept of actions and dreams (Sue, 2007). Freire’s proposition that opposes the â€Å"banking concept† of education is imperative because it presents unique and different teaching and learning approaches.   The concept proposed by Freire employs the â€Å"problem posing† tactic useful in different settings (M. Guajardo F. Guajardo 2008).   The methodology can be useful to isolated communities for the purpose of initiating both personal and community transformation. This is because when faced with problems, they will respond to the challenges and transform themselves, based on the conception that through the individual though it is possible to realize change (M. Guajardo F. Guajardo 2008). The pedagogy of oppression presents the reader with facts that can become useful in shaping researchers into creators of knowledge. Freire’s work has become an inspiration to learners as well as teachers who have been able to realize the in justices perpetuated by the â€Å"banking approach† of forma l education.   In addition, different settings including sociological, institutional and economical have benefited from Freire’s notion of education (M. Guajardo F. Guajardo 2008). Conclusion Freire’s view of traditional pedagogy as oppressive and the proposition of the learning concept based on â€Å"problem posing† are useful in transforming communities. His work, however, fails to discuss the significance of a teacher in his proposed concept. In addition, the author’s work does not include the aspect gender, race and class and, therefore, open to criticism. The author discusses the issue of humanization and dehumanization; he asserts that oppressors thwart humanization through the injustice, violence and exploitation that they perpetuate.   Freire’s pedagogy is worth recognizing because of its ability transform individuals into thinkers able to fight for their liberation. Explain and Evaluate Two Approaches to Explaining Moral Development Essay Moral development is what we consider to be right, wrong, good or bad. It is developed from infancy through to adulthood and is the principles we use to determine what is right or wrong, fair or unfair. Each individual has their own understanding of what morality is, however generally this is determined largely by the culture or society we live in and the rules that we conform to within this society. In psychology there are many theories around the beliefs of moral development, and how morality is developed from childhood to adulthood. The reason for the different theories is due to the methods, ways of study adopted by the psychologists to study human behaviour. These theories allow us to compare and gives us the opportunity to take into consideration all views and ideas and not to settle for just one argument or approach around this subject. Then moving on to the social learning theory, and Bandura’s contribution to how morality develops. Criticisms of these theories will be discussed and evaluations based on the two studies will be made. Piaget was the first psychologist to study cognitive development in children. His work dates back to 1932 and his findings stated that morality develops through childhood and adolescence. He believed that children pass through different levels of morality according to their cognitive development. Piaget conducted a number of experiments and from these tests concluded that children up to the age of three or four could not make moral judgements as they were not able to understand rules at this age. He stated, if the children were unable to understand the rules and that they were breaking then they were unable to make moral judgements. He believed that once children could understand the rules, and that they were breaking them then this was the age that moral development began. From his research, this started at the age of about eight years old. Woods B, (2004 pg.72) Piaget believed that moral development in children of this age takes place in two stages. Stage one- heterononmous morality described as morality imposed from outside. This is when children see the rules as been made by parents, teachers or God and that they are unchangeable. Morality at this stage is based on moral punishment, you do something wrong and you will be punished. This stage is described by Piaget as the pre-operational stage of development where the child is only able to make his judgement based on the consequence of the action. The second stage- Autonomous morality described as morality which is based on the child’s own rules is apparent when the child is able to decentre and distinguish the intent behind the action along with the consequence of the action. It is the stage at which children are able to understand that rules are flexible to change and according to the situation. Woods B, (2004 pg.72) From Piagets experiments he was able to conclude that morality is based on the amount of cognitive development, how intelligent one is. The strengths of Piaget’s theory are that whilst conducting his experiments he did focus on children alone as learners. He contributed hugely to our understanding of education and believed that this was the key to saving our society. Piaget’s moral theory was described by his experiment with children that involved rules whilst playing a game of marbles. Children under the age of five showed they had no rules, children aged between ages 5-10 saw the rules as fixed and children 10 and above realised the rules and also adopted them by mutual consent. Moral dilemmas were also presented to children by Piaget to develop his theory further. He gave children a pair of stories where there first child deliberately caused a small amount of damage due to his actions. The second child caused much more damage but his actions were a result of an accident. Piaget asked the children to describe which character deserved to be punished in his attempt to understand children’s reasoning in their answers. His conclusion from his experiment was that younger children focused more on consequences, whilst the older ones took into consideration intent. From Piaget’s theory we have a greater understanding on the influence of mental processes on behaviour, we have greater understanding on perception and thinking. Along with the above, Piagets theory has had practical benefits such learning skills to improve memory and improving problem solving skills. Dwyer D Charles C (2006 pg318) Both of the above experiments have been criticised. Other theorists have claimed that games of marbles do not represent a childs entire perception of morality. Piagets use of moral dilemmas has also been criticised. It has been claimed that younger children only focused on consequences because the story was narrated, however the results may not have been the same if the stories were watched on video. Younger children may have been better able to consider intentions if they were. Other theorists conducting similar research found that, although younger children had some conception of intent, they still preferred to judge in terms of consequences because they found this easier. Piagets theory has also been criticised to be culture specific. It has been said that it is based on moral universals. It has been claimed that the moral development of children in non western cultures may differ from that of the children Piaget investigated. Researchers conducting scientific experiments need to have two or more observers; Piaget observed and noted his findings alone. He was criticised for making generalisations with his findings by being culture specific and not taking into account background, tradition and upbringing of each child. An example of this is using clinical interviews to study the thinking of children. His sample size was criticised for being too small and did not give much consideration to social understanding. Due to all the criticisms above regarding Piagets work we can evaluate his theory as weak hence leading to errors in his conclusions. Haralambos M Rice D. (pg 522). Social learning theory approach to moral development is based on the idea that moral development happens as a result of observing and imitation. Albert Bandura 1977 studied this concept and came up with findings that concluded that children learn through recognition, reward and punishment. Social learning theorist, focus particularly on observational learning, imitation, recognition and reward. Woods B, (2004 pg. 126) Bandura conducted a number of experiments observing children’s behaviour towards an inflatable doll also called a Bobo doll. The children were separated into groups and the first watched an adult behaving aggressively towards this blown up inflatable doll. This was the aggressive model conditioning. The second group of children, the adult played with the other toys and was the non aggressive model condition. Along with a control group, which included children from the group who had witnessed an adult being violent and aggressive towards the Bobo doll. This group was then left in a room with a number of toys but not allowed to play with them in an attempt to build up the children’s frustration. The children were later left in a room and results were noted. The children who witnessed the adult being aggressive towards the Bobo doll imitated this behaviour and those from the non aggressive model displayed lower levels of aggression and violence, hence showing that children learn through imitation. He believed that children learn through observation, imitation and reinforcement which are all closely linked. Woods B, (2004 pg. 126) Along with Piaget’s theory, Bandura’s theory also has its criticisms. Bandura’s social learning theory takes into consideration cognitive learning but concentrates more upon the idea that morality is developed through positive reinforcement, imitation and the social environment. Woods B, (2004 pg. 71) When evaluating Bandura’s, experiment in attempt to understanding moral development, it is important to point out that the experiments were conducted in a laboratory and hence the results may not be true in the real world. Critics have also pointed out that there may be selection bias as the children in the experiment were all from the same socio economic background, making the results invalid and not true to society. The long term effect of this experiment is not known as the results were noted immediately, and the reality is very different to an experiment. Even though the children displayed violent behaviour towards the doll this does not prove that they would be violent towards another person. Both the theorists have contributed to understanding of moral development in today’s society and both equally face criticisms to their work. The main aspects that have been pointed out and open to attack are that both Bandura and Piaget have given little consideration to feelings, culture and religious beliefs. There sample was small not allowing general conclusions and findings to be widely acceptable. There experiments have been attacked for not being scientific. They failed to recognise that moral development has different content and meaning in different cultures and moral judgement is hugely influenced by society’s common law and traditions. Parents role and child nourishment are vital in how children and adolescents develop morally. Both Piaget and Bandura failed to take these important points into consideration when conducting their research. Piaget has studied cognitive development and his contributions are invaluable in the development of today education and the human development theory.
